Under the skinfluence: the skincare influencers I love seeing on my feed

Skincare is continually on the up, with people using these times at home to experiment and improve their skin, especially when they’re not wearing as much makeup as we were pre-Covid. So the rise of the skinfluencer, or skincare influencer, is inevitable and welcomed. The world of skincare can be overwhelming just as it is exciting, so its great that there are creators and enthusiasts out there who actively educate and guide us through how we can upgrade our skincare game. There’s someone out there for everyone, for each skin type, tone, gender, age, and of course skin concerns. At the end of the day, opinions on skincare are always going to be somewhat subjective and personal to each individual and their skin. Nevertheless, there’s no harm in getting first or second opinions from those who have taken the time to do their research and share their findings with us. From dermatologists to MUAs to the everyday enthusiast, I’ve put together a round up of some of my favourite faces that I follow.

@sknperfct

Evie is just goals, her skin is just flawless. You’ll notice a theme in the skinfluencers I follow, I like those who break down the supposedly complex topics, and Evie does that simply and eloquently. Her bio reads “she wastes her money so that we don’t have to” and its so true, there have been many a product I’ve debated splurging on and a couple of scrolls on Evie’s insta later, I’ve thought otherwise or its sealed the deal. She has also convinced me to explore the world of self tanning products, because yes black girls can use them too. She’s worked with brands such as Tan Luxe and By Terry to showcase how us with deeper skin tones can use tanning products to even out and warm up our skin tones, to give our skin that gorgeous holiday glow we all crave, especially now and in the winter months.

@_alicialartey

Alicia is a Biomed undergraduate and a trainee Esthetician so you can trust her recommendations are from trial and review yes, but also strong scientific backing. I love going to her page for her honest reviews for new discoveries or popular products where she shares her thoughts, how to use them along with any advice or useful infographics where she breaks down what are usually complex ingredients. If you have a question, she’ll often answer on her stories, but more often than not, she’d have covered it on her grid.

@andrewwheatcroft

Andrew is unapologetically himself and we all love him for it. Never fails to bring us some sort of entertainment, whether or not that is fueled by his new love/hate relationship with Magnum, the tonic wine. (if you’re curious about this drink, I’m telling you now, do NOT do it). I love that how open he is about his journey to where he is now, as well as not shying away from talking about life and mental health too, all of which is so important. I also love how excited he gets when brands like La Mer gift him, its nice to know that not all influencers are desensitized or entitled to exciting boujie gifting. He’s a cheerleader for his fellow creators, and reminds us all to go at your own pace and do what makes us happy, and the rest will follow – his journey is testament to that. He doesn’t claim to be an expert in anything, his partnerships always feel authentic and I like that its almost that he takes us along with him through his content. For instance, he only recently started wearing makeup, mostly complexion and glow boosters, but its great that he’s not shied away from letting us know its a new area for him and taking us along for the ride. His hack about contouring with fake tan is genius, and if they did fake tan dark enough for me to try this, I would most definitely be on that. I’ve only followed him for a short while, I believe I have Lisa Caldognetto and Kelly to thank for this, but I’m grateful to have seen his success and partnerships such as Fenty Skin most recently.

@drewomaaukeleghe

Dr Ewoma is the founder and CEO of SknDoctor, the cosmetics and medical skincare clinic, alongside a columnist in Women’s Health mag, and if you couldn’t tell by the above photo, she’s an award winning medical and cosmetic doctor. In a nutshell, she is more than qualified to advise on skincare and is a credible source on the internet to refer to. If you wanted an in-depth consultation with her, you’d need to book and pay for this service via SknDoctor, but she has collabed with the likes of L’Oreal Paris, La Roche Posay and The Inkey List to advise on general concerns and debunk any myths. Whenever she shares products she’s using and enjoying on her stories, I almost immediately screenshot it and decide later if its something I need. I mean, look at her skin and her credentials – wouldn’t you!? Whilst I’m personally not looking at cosmetic surgery options, I respect that Dr Ewoma looks to quash the notion that black women shouldn’t or wouldn’t have filler or other enhancements, and has been open about procedures she’s had herself.

@amourophelia

I was “virtually” introduced to Jasmine through a mutual friend of ours almost 2 years back, and I’ve fallen in love with her content each and every time she posts. Pre-Covid she had the most beautiful travel photos alongside beauty, but I’ve noticed in lockdown that her beauty shots have come even more to life and these alone have introduced me to some incredible brands I wouldn’t normally come across. She’s all about the glowy glossy look, which translates into her makeup too. Both a facial and body care fanatic, she’s very knowledgeable about the various ingredients that help her achieve that healthy glow and I’ve learnt a lot in her GRWM style stories. Her site, AMOUR OPHELIA, is firstly an aesthetic dream to navigate but furthermore is packed with incredible content produced by her; ranging guides, edits and even interviews with some of the coolest names in the beauty game.

@adeolagboyega

Adeola does it all; MUA, glowing skin queen, Sheerluxe beauty contributor and on top of that, is also the UK Education & Artistry Manager for the incredible Pat McGrath Labs. Everyone knows about the #AdeGlow, and thankfully she provides amazing skincare tips to prep and protect your skin, and puts us all onto cool devices and tools to upgrade our skincare game. Beware, by following her you’ll sure to spend some serious money on either skincare or Pat McGrath, there’s absolutely no escaping it….and I wouldn’t have it any other way!

@carolinehirons

I couldn’t write this list without the OG skinfluencer, queen Hirons herself. Often known for being “outspoken or opinionated”, but as she said so herself everyone has an opinion, she just chooses to use her voice to say hers. And rightly so, she stands up for those voices who aren’t always heard, and is a co-founder of the incredible Beauty Backed campaign. The industry respects her opinion highly, listening out to hear what she has to say about the newest launches and every brand wants to be a part of her exclusive seasonal kits, which continue to sell out in record time. Caroline is just a fountain of skincare knowledge, like I don’t know how she remembers it all – luckily for us she’s put it all into a helpful book, aptly named ‘Skincare‘. Any questions you turn to google for, is helpfully in this book in some way shape or form – what more could you want? I got this for Christmas so I’m ready to properly UP my skincare game by the end of this year.

@bambidoesbeauty

I think I only came across Elle when properly in the last two years, I think it was part of a work campaign and she is what juicy dewy skin dreams are made of. Whilst I initially followed for her gorgeous texture shots, I stayed around for her helpful easy-to-follow advice, and I’m always on the look out for her Glamour columns. She’s also made great use stories and the newer Guides feature on Instagram to host her curated lists in different categories. I also love that she’s super real on her grid, with regular intermissions of reality checks on mental wellbeing, broaching topics from comparison to encouraging reminders to our younger selves.

@jsarudzai

I can’t remember how I came across Saru but I’m so glad I did. Representation in skin tones in the skincare is just as important as diverse skin types, if not more so. Its great if a brand says an SPF is universal and has no white cast, and only promote it using a selective similar type of influencer; we need to see it for ourselves on people that looks like us. Slight tangent, but what I’m trying to say is I love following Saru for this reason, as I think we have a similar skin type as well as skin tone, so I use her as reference for a fair few things. She was the one who put me onto cleansing oils actually so thank you Saru. She also posts some beautiful effortless hair and makeup looks plus hilarious skincare themed reels which we can all low key relate to.

@daninicholls

I feel like I came across Dani’s page via LaurenNicoleFK, and I’ve not looked back since! She’s the sweetest person with the loveliest accent and is a skincare obsessive, focusing mainly on acne and hyper-pigmentation. She’s joined the world of TikTok and taken it by storm, showing us all how she overcame acne and the products, tips and advice she followed to get the flawless glow she has now. She’s moved a lot of her skincare content over to TikTok now but her grid still has her quick but detailed reviews of affordable and effective skincare brands, and I love that she’d filmed these for us in her lunch breaks whilst teaching – an efficient queen!

@lucyparts

Lucy is a Beauty Editor at the wonderful Stylist Mag alongside freelancing too, and is well versed in making skincare accessible and easy to understand through the use of infographic carousels for our most frequently asked questions in the skincare world. I believe she’s also a Lincolnshire girl so extra points from me. She’s perfected the art of bringing skincare education back to the basics, and introducing new techniques or ingredients, such as Azealic Acid, to the masses in an non-intimidating way.

Are there any other skinfluencers that you love to follow? Drop their @’s down below in the comments so I can follow them too. Hope you’ve enjoyed this read and maybe even found someone new to follow!

Until next time,
